Background of the Study

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in nursing education is a transformative step in enhancing learning outcomes and the efficiency of nursing programs. AI technologies have been increasingly applied across various educational sectors, including nursing, as a tool to improve the quality of education and the development of competencies necessary for modern healthcare (Xu et al., 2023). In nursing education, AI can be used to simulate clinical scenarios, monitor student performance, assist in personalized learning, and provide instant feedback, making the learning process more engaging and interactive (Patel et al., 2024). Additionally, AI can aid nursing educators by automating administrative tasks, allowing them more time to focus on student mentorship and curriculum development (Agarwal et al., 2023). However, despite its potential, the integration of AI in nursing education is not without challenges. These challenges include the need for adequate infrastructure, training for faculty, and concerns regarding the ethical implications of AI applications in patient care education (Bennett et al., 2023). In Kaduna State University, the integration of AI into nursing education represents a critical step toward modernizing the curriculum and preparing nursing students for a technologically advanced healthcare system. However, there is a need to critically assess the extent to which AI has been successfully integrated into the nursing program, its impact on student learning, and the readiness of faculty members to adopt such technologies.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing integration of AI in global nursing education, there is limited research regarding its application in Nigerian institutions, particularly in Kaduna State University School of Nursing. The challenges faced by nursing schools in Nigeria, such as insufficient infrastructure, lack of AI-trained educators, and resistance to change, may hinder the successful implementation of AI technologies in nursing education. Furthermore, while AI promises improvements in educational delivery, there is a lack of empirical evidence on its effectiveness in enhancing the learning outcomes of nursing students. Without understanding the current state of AI integration, its impact on students’ skills development, and the factors influencing its adoption, nursing education in Kaduna State University may not realize the full potential of AI in advancing healthcare education.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the extent of AI integration in nursing education at Kaduna State University School of Nursing.
  2. To assess the impact of AI tools on nursing students' learning outcomes.
  3. To explore the challenges and opportunities associated with AI integration in nursing education.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent has AI been integrated into the nursing education curriculum at Kaduna State University School of Nursing?
  2. How does the integration of AI in nursing education affect the learning outcomes of nursing students?
  3. What are the challenges and opportunities faced by nursing educators in integrating AI into the nursing curriculum?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant impact of AI integration on nursing students' learning outcomes at Kaduna State University.
  2. The level of infrastructure and faculty training does not significantly affect the successful integration of AI in nursing education.
  3. There are no significant challenges faced by nursing educators in the implementation of AI technologies at Kaduna State University.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of this study is limited to nursing education within Kaduna State University School of Nursing. The research will focus on the integration of AI tools and technologies in the nursing curriculum, the challenges faced by educators, and the learning outcomes of students. Limitations include the availability of AI technologies, faculty readiness, and the potential resistance from educators or students to new technologies. Furthermore, the study will focus solely on Kaduna State University, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other institutions in Nigeria.
